Ilha do Guajirú
Ilha do Guajirú - History
Ilha do Guajirú - Island of Guajiru, is a peninsula located approx. 230 km north of Fortaleza on the direct way to Jeri.
The sand bank approx. 500 m in front of the beach with a lenght of approx. 4 km created over the years a huge natural lagoon. Most of the land were used as a coconut plantage and there are still some areas.
The main beach of Ilha do Guajirú is called "Praia da Barra" and is located in the middle of the 4 km lagoon. Some Pousadas and restaurants exist more than 10 years and were mostly used by the residents of Itarema and surrounding for weekend entertainment.
Itarema is a town of approx. 30.000 residents and rapidly growing. The distance to Ilha do Guajirú is 5 km which is the reason that there are no supermarkets at Ilha.
Before the new road was finished 3 years ago, just some down winders explored Ilha do Guajirú because the old road to Jeri led over Itapipoca and did not pass Itarema. Most of the guys kept it as a secret but as it is with all secrets......
Latest after the new road was finished Ilha do Guajirú and Itarema grew up rapidly. Within the last 5 years 10 new Pousadas were built and most of the old Pousadas were rebuilt/renovated. But do not be scared it is still quite here. In total there are approx. 200 rooms at Ilha do Guajirú.
